For Young Professionals - how to advance effectively on your career path

Among the young professionals who graduated from schools within a few years, some of them have strong desire to advance. Those who don't are not worth to discuss. However, a common mistake they often make is trying to short cut the path of the learning curve. Take the electrical designer position for instance, you are so eager to get on new designs after just touched the skin of an "old" design. You think only new designs will bring you valuable knowledge and experience. In fact, it's the opposite. An "old" design, a mature platform, has accumulated many experiences and know-hows from others who worked on it for years.  All these know-hows and experiences are the best treasure for you to learn. You can have all your questions answered by senior designers around who knows the design. An inexperienced engineer facing a new design challenge is like a person standing in the crossing of many unknown streets, not knowing what to do. You might think product testing is boring, not knowing testing is in fact the best way to get deep understanding of how the circuit works.  For power conversion circuits, the fundamental principles are very simple, and you know one, you almost know all. What distinguishes the strong and the weak are the capabilities in understanding and reasoning the details. The best way to build up such capabilities is to work on known "old" designs.  To become a design master it takes many years of accumulation of experiences and knowledge, no short cut.

Changing job is another way many young professionals think will get them more skills. That is another false perception. When you switch to a different company, you often have to start from scratch and some of your early gains will be washed away in the new job. It's not an efficient way to advance in depth. Remember that the breadth of knowledge is far less important than its depth. Breadth only becomes valuable when you have reached enough depth in a specific field. Otherwise, you are only good at bragging and cannot take on any real deal.

The most costly mistake is not knowing why you want to gain the skills and experiences. Your skills and experiences are your intangible assets and they won't become tangible unless you have the chance to use them. In today's society, you need a good company in which you gain the TRUST from the management through your hard work and contributions, and are assigned job duties that allow you to materialize your skills and knowledge. "Trust" is the key word here. When you keep jumping through different jobs hoping to find an opportunity (the trust), you actually are demolishing your chances. After you jump over 4 or 5 jobs, you will find it's even hard to get the next interview. Trust is a human thing. If you believe the company you work for and the managers have their attentions on you, you better appreciate and realize this could be the "Trust" you won't find elsewhere.  Final word: your best bet is to 1) find a good company; 2) work hard to learn and contribute; 3) be patient.

The craftsman's spirit is defined by the Baidu encyclopedia as one who is devoted to make things with perfection, precision, concentration, patience and persistence. We need craftsman's spirit.

It's hard to find a good company that suits us very well. It includes learning environment, working environment and living environment. Many young people are on their way to find it. But once we join any company, we should study hard and contribute, because he gave the opportunity to learn and salary, we need to be grateful.
