Amazon’s proposed constellation is said to have 3,236 satellites and is called Project Kuiper.

SpaceX’s constellation will consist of 4,425 satellites and is called Starlink. It has plans to expand it to 12,000 satellites.

Both schemes are for low orbit constellations aimed at delivering internet access to those who can’t already get it.

According to the UN’s Broadband Commission for Sustainable Development half the world population  – 3.8 billion people – does not have access to the internet.

The Commission has set out goals for reducing this number by 2025 including:

Entry-level broadband services should be made affordable in developing countries, at less than 2% of monthly gross national income per capita.

Broadband / Internet user penetration should reach: 75% worldwide, 65% in developing countries, and 35% in least developed countries.
